Playlists as long as the dish takes to cook. Hand-curated, human-brained. A small act of resistance against the algorithm that keeps playing the same sad indie song.
At some point Spotify stopped being useful for finding music and started being very good at offering the same music, slightly rearranged. I wanted something to cook to – something that matched the rhythm of actually standing at a stove for two hours. What I got were playlists assembled by an algorithm that had clearly never cooked anything in its life.
The fix was obvious once I’d seen it done elsewhere: playlists timed to the dish. But timing is only half of it. So far, I created three playlists for three dishes, each also with a theme – because why not.
Rock’n’Roulade: everything that rocks, rolls, or has opinions about beef. Pelmeni: anything Eastern, doughy, or vaguely Slavic in spirit. Rheinischer Sauerbraten: well. If you know, you know. Helau.
Hand-curated, human-brained, no algorithmic input. Just music that fits the time you’re spending on something that takes as long as it takes – and has something to say about what’s in the pot.
